What languages are spoken on the islands? |
| |
Dhivehi is the official language of the Maldives . Closely related to Sinhala and southern Indian coastal languages, Dhivehi is written in Arabic thaana script. The use of new Dhivehi adaptations of all foreign words, including English, requires official sanction.
English, however, is widely spoken in the islands and is the common language at the Per Aquum properties. Japanese, German, Italian, French, and Dutch are also commonly spoken by both staff and guests. |
