What is the currency in the Maldives ?

The Maldivian currency is the Rufiyaa “Rf” (paper bills) and Laaree (coins). One Rufiyaa is equivalent to 100 Laarees. The US Dollar is the most commonly used foreign currency. One US Dollar is equivalent to 12.75 Rf, a rate that does not vary much.

Any amount of foreign currency can be brought into the Maldives without declaring and can be taken out without any restriction.

Payments in the marina, resorts and hotels can be made in most hard currency in cash, travelers’ cheques or credit cards. Most of the shops and souvenir shops in Malé accept all major credit cards but none of these shops can get you cash from your card. The ATMs are located at a few places on the capital island only, and at the moment provide service only for locals and will not accept your credit or debit card. In Malé both US$ and Local RF$ is accepted by shops and taxi. HSBC is the only major international bank. Telegraphic transfers can be done from the Maldives.

While working at Dhoni Mighili you will have little need for cash. Any purchases from the hotel (alcohol, toiletries, phone charges, etc.) will be recorded under your account and settled at the end of each month.
