Per AQUUM RESPONSIBILITY
Per AQUUM's vision to make a difference extends to every aspect of the company, including our impact on the communities and environments that surround our retreats.
Located in some of the world's most spectacular destinations, we take pleasure in bringing travellers experiences to remember. At the same time, we have a passionate commitment to give back to our communities - maintaining the peace and the beauty of the environment while sharing our successes with our hosts.
Per AQUUM works with local groups, consulting environmental experts and international NGOs in creating projects that aid community and environmental sustainability. Fuelled by the same level of passion and imagination we apply to hospitality, we ensure that each social and environmental initiative makes a transformative difference.
We would like you to reflect on the following pages and share our vision with us. We invite you to join us in making a difference.
ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL INITIATIVES
Fringed by an ecosystem of immeasurable beauty, Per AQUUM's Huvafen Fushi and NIYAMA in the Maldives are dedicated to expanding the protection and awareness of their house reefs. In 2006, Per AQUUM launched a project to enhance the house reef of Huvafen Fushi and to speed the recovery from the 1998 Indian Ocean bleaching event, when unusually warm surface waters damaged countless reefs. Two Consultant Marine Biologists managed the project, successfully restoring an ecosystem at the underwater spa through the development of a coral nursery and coral reef rehabilitation project.
Since then, Per AQUUM has appointed two Resident Marine Biologists, one at each property, to monitor the house reef and reef fish. Guests and members of the Per AQUUM community also have the invaluable opportunity to learn about this vital ecosystem from the Marine Biologists by adopting their own coral at the coral nursery which is then transplanted onto the reef. A six month update is sent to guests with a picture of its growth thus creating a very personal link between Per AQUUM and their guests.

For many Maldivian islands, the primary source of income is through tuna fishing. In its vision to diversify and support local Maldivian communities, Per AQUUM has sponsored a sustainable business to produce coconut oil, salt scrubs and handcrafted massage tools for use in LIME and AQUUM spas. The business employs fifteen people from the local community, including many women who were not previously employed.
Per AQUUM is excited to offer these traditional formulas to guests. The Maldivian people have been using virgin coconut oil for centuries, trusting its unique, sensuous formula, to protect against the sun's rays. The oil hydrates and nourishes the skin with its anti-aging, antibacterial and healing properties. Guests can savour the luxurious oil or delight in the treatments with locally-made salt scrubs and coconut wood massage tools.
For every bottle of coconut oil sold in its spa retail outlets, Per AQUUM will donate US$5 to its social responsibility programmes.
